Living with celiac disease can be challenging, especially when it comes to finding safe body and household products that won't trigger a gluten reaction. As a celiac myself, I understand the importance of avoiding gluten at all costs to prevent getting "glutened."

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by the ingestion of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When individuals with celiac disease consume even microscopic amounts of gluten, their immune system attacks the lining of the small intestine, leading to various symptoms and long-term complications.

Celiac disease symptoms can manifest in different ways for each individual, with typical cases resulting in extreme GI upset/pain. In a-typical cases, such as myself, there can be an absence of GI symptoms but other manifestations. In my case, I experience shooting nerve pain, vertigo, brain fog and sometimes the inability to control the muscles in my extremities. Silent celiac is perhaps the most deadly form of the disease. Individuals with silent celiac may never experience any symptoms at the time they are "glutened" until more severe long-term complications, such as organ failure, present themselves.

Why is it Important to Use Celiac Safe Products?

Using celiac safe body and household products is crucial for individuals with celiac disease to prevent accidental gluten exposure. Even small amounts of gluten in products like shampoo, lotion, or cleaning supplies can be accidentally ingested, leading to symptoms and potential damage to the intestines.

A great example of this is using soap on the face where trace amounts can be ingested. Another example is if a guest uses a gluten-containing hair spray in the bathroom, and then you unknowingly touch the countertop where trace amounts fell, and later touch your food.

How to Find Celiac Safe Products?

When looking for celiac safe products, it's essential to read labels carefully and look for "gluten-free" or "certified gluten-free." Avoid products with ingredients like wheat germ oil, barley extract, or hydrolyzed wheat protein. Additionally, consider purchasing products from brands that specialize in gluten-free items and follow strict manufacturing practices. Never hesitate to call the manufacturer if labelling is unclear. Items with gluten-free ingredients may have been processed on the same equipment as gluten and therefore contain trace amounts.
