DIY Farm Sign

May 10, 2019Caitlin Hoover

*Note: This project reflects our old ranch name. We rebranded to Healing Moon Farm & Ranch™ in early 2019.

It’s official! We have our very own ranch sign! Most working ranches and farms in Texas have a large pipe fence or metal sign at the beginning of their service roads/drive ways. For us, that wasn’t financially feasible at the moment but we wanted some way to keep people from driving past our service road and missing their turn. Particularly the FEDEX drivers who keep calling and telling us our address doesn’t exist (LOL).

We mostly used left over scrap materials to make this sign. However, if you need to buy all the materials to make one yourself, we provided a materials list below.

Materials Needed

2 - 4 x 4 x 8 posts

1 - 1 x 8 x 8’s (for your hanging ranch or house number sign)

2 - 1 x 8 x 6’s (front and back of the planter box)

1 - 1 x 4 x 6 (bottom of planter box) [make sure you drill holes for drainage!]

1 - 2 x 4 x 6 (horizontal piece connecting the top of the 4x4’s behind the molding)

Your choice of wood molding to frame your sign and go across the 2x4 at the top

2 - 4 x 4 post toppers (optional for aesthetic)

1 - solar landscaping spotlight (optional for aesthetic)

Wood Filler (optional)

220 grain sanding block

Wood Stain

Polyeurethane

Wood Letters or numbers from a craft store (can also use stencils to paint on yourself. Be creative!)

Exterior Weatherproof Sealant Paint

1 box - 1 inch screws (coarse thread for soft wood and fine thread for hard wood)

Note: I would recommend using thin nails or a nail gun for the moulding instead of screws like I did. This will give a much sleeker look and avoid cracking your moulding. Hindsight is 20/20!
